How to Get the Shrouded Race in The Veil
Shrouded is the secret race. You cannot roll it at the Stylist: you earn it from a side quest given by the Pit Tamer, deep in a tunnel under Camp Zero, and the last step kills your character and brings it back as Shrouded. It replaces the race you have, so decide before you jump.
How do you get Shrouded?
Equip a Cowl and a Ragged Cloth. Go to the Camp Zero obelisk, take the door in the wall down through The Vein to The Undying Altar and talk to the Pit Tamer. Kill 100 Shrouded with both items on, report back, then jump into the pit of white flames. You die, respawn as Shrouded, and finish by talking to the Pit Tamer once more.
How to Get the Shrouded Race
The full route with on-screen captions: Camp Zero and its obelisk, The Vein, the Pit Tamer, the Cowl and Ragged Cloth rule, the 100 Shrouded kills, the white-flame pit and the finished race tooltip. The video has music and no narration.
What Shrouded does
The in-game race tooltip, read from two recordings a month apart (September 9 and October 5), with the same text and numbers in both:
- Rarity label: Elite Race
- Thrice-Risen: “You can jump a third time in mid-air, after your second.”
- Hollowed: +10% movement speed, +10% attack speed, −10% damage
The flavour line reads: “The Pale's blessing. You went into the pit a person and came out of it a shape.” The October copy labels the first Hollowed bonus “speed” instead of “movement speed”. The numbers did not change.
Is Shrouded worth it?
On basic attacks the two Hollowed numbers almost cancel out. Ten percent more attacks at ninety percent damage is 1.10 × 0.90 = 0.99, so about 1% less damage per second, if attack speed scales hits evenly. Damage that attack speed does not touch, such as casts and abilities, simply loses 10%. The tooltip only says “damage”, so assume the penalty covers everything.
What you are paying for is movement: a tenth faster on foot, and a third jump no other race has. That makes Shrouded a good swap for a race that gives you little, such as Hiveling or Skeleton. It is a poor trade for Veilborne, Goblin or Underling, which all add damage. The player who recorded the September 9 route gave up Underling for it. This is the site's judgement, not a measured result, and Shrouded is left off the tier list until someone tests it in real fights.
Route, step by step
- Get a Cowl and a Ragged Cloth. The in-game Bestiary lists both at 1 in 5 from Wraiths and from Imps, so one short farm usually covers them. Equip both. The quest text says to wear them “where they can be seen”, and a kill you take with your face uncovered does not count.
- Travel to Camp Zero. The game describes it as a town “pulled together from the unfinished matter of the Pale”, where “a species seems to inhabit this place, lurking in the shadows”. Unlock the Camp Zero obelisk near the house at the back of the camp. The September 9 video puts Camp Zero at coordinates 2744, 27.9, but that figure comes from one creator's caption.
- Enter The Vein. From the obelisk go straight down to a door, or gate, in the wall. Inside is The Vein, “an uncharted tunnel that echoes with cries of the damned”. Follow it past the flame.
- Talk to the Pit Tamer. He waits at The Undying Altar, “a chamber centered around a pit of white flame”. His side quest reads: “Wear a Cowl and a Ragged Cloth where they can be seen, then unmake 100 Shrouded. He will not count a kill you took with your face uncovered.”
- Unmake 100 Shrouded. Shrouded are enemies, not other players. One recording farms them in The Pale and Camp Zero, and the tracker counts “Unmade: 0/100” upwards. If the counter stops moving, check that both items are still equipped.
- Report back. At the Pit Tamer, choose “One hundred. They are unmade.” His next line is a plain warning: “(THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR RACE…)”. The tracker moves to “Jump into the pit of white flames.”
- Jump into the pit of white flames. Your character dies. In both recordings it respawned away from the altar, and the race had already changed. The September 9 run went from Underling to Shrouded and lost its horns and racial markings.
- Return to the Pit Tamer. The last objective is “Return to the Pit Tamer and let him look at you.” Neither recording shows a separate reward for this final talk.
The pit replaces your race. No recording shows the quest being repeated, and none shows what a later Stylist reroll does to a Shrouded character. If you are holding a race you would hate to lose, the safe assumption is that you will not get it back for free.
Not the only “secret race” video
A September 8 showcase calls Purgatorian a secret Mythic race. In that video the creator explains the developers gave it to him and calls it unobtainable. No public route exists, so Shrouded is the only secret race a player can earn.
What is not confirmed
- Whether the quest can be done again on the same character, or what a Stylist reroll does after it.
- Whether cosmetic (vanity) slots count as “where they can be seen”. Every recording wears the items normally.
- Whether the −10% applies to summon damage as well. The tooltip just says “damage”.
- One September 7 video says Shrouded “should also appear” in the Stylist's reroll pool at 5%. Nobody has shown it being rolled, so this page treats Shrouded as quest-only.
- Where Shrouded spawn fastest. One video says to use something it calls a “night crawler” first and wait for them to spawn. No other recording mentions it.
